Gangneung May weather, rail bike & what to wear — a local's complete guide

KoreaWithLocal · Updated May 2026

Why May is the best month to visit Gangneung

I've been to Gangneung in every season, and if someone asks me when to go, my answer is always May or October. May in particular hits a sweet spot that's hard to find at other times of year. The East Sea water is clear, the air is clean, the coastal scenery is at its greenest, and the temperature has finally climbed to a point where being outside for a full day is genuinely comfortable rather than something you have to dress carefully to survive.

In April, Gangneung is beautiful but the mornings can still bite — lows in the single digits, wind off the ocean that makes you reach for another layer. By May, that edge is mostly gone. Daytime highs regularly reach 22–25°C (72–77°F), mornings are mild rather than cold, and the long stretch of clear days in early-to-mid May is the best window for outdoor activities the whole year offers. Rail bike, coastal walks, beach mornings, Goblin filming site visits — all of it works better in May than in April.

There's also the food. Gangneung's coffee culture, seafood, sundubu, market street food — none of that is weather-dependent, but somehow it all tastes better when you're eating it in good weather after a morning by the sea. May gives you that. It's a genuinely special month here.

Gangneung May weather — real 2026 temperature data

Gangneung May is noticeably warmer and more stable than April. The cloud and rain pattern that defines Gangneung's early spring gives way to a longer stretch of clear days, particularly through mid-May. Here's how the month breaks down.

Early May (May 1–10) — High: 20–25°C (68–77°F) / Low: 9–14°C (48–57°F). Mostly sunny with some cloud. Rain expected around May 2. The temperature range is wide — afternoon warmth is real, but mornings still cool off noticeably.

Mid May (May 11–20) — High: 19–24°C (66–75°F) / Low: 10–15°C (50–59°F). The clearest, most consistently sunny stretch of the month. This is the golden window for outdoor activities. Rail bike, Gyeongpo Beach, coastal walks — schedule these here if you can.

Late May (May 21–30) — High: 22–25°C (72–77°F) / Low: 12–16°C (54–61°F). Still warm but more cloud and rain mix back in. Rain expected around May 25 and May 29. The afternoons are among the warmest of the month, but you'll want to keep an eye on the forecast.

※ Forecast data based on April 2026 readings. Always recheck 2–3 days before your travel date.

Key takeaway: Mid-May (roughly May 10–20) is Gangneung's clearest stretch of the month. If you can align your outdoor plans with this window, do it. For late May visitors, check the forecast carefully and build flexibility into your itinerary.

What to wear in Gangneung in May

May is the first month in Gangneung where the daytime wardrobe genuinely simplifies. You're no longer managing a 15-degree morning-to-afternoon swing the way April demands. A t-shirt is the right base layer for most of May, with a light jacket or cardigan available for mornings, evenings, and coastal exposure.

Early May still has lows around 9–10°C (48–50°F), so mornings need a layer. By late May, overnight lows have climbed to 15–16°C (59–61°F) and evenings are comfortable without much extra clothing. Shorts are reasonable on warmer afternoons in mid-to-late May. Sunscreen becomes genuinely necessary — UV levels are strong in May even on partly cloudy days.

Early May outfit: T-shirt + light jacket for mornings and evenings. Jeans or cotton trousers. Waterproof sneakers if rain is forecast. Sunscreen.

Mid May outfit: T-shirt during the day — fully sufficient. Light jacket in the bag for coastal spots and evenings. Cotton pants or jeans. Comfortable walking shoes. Sunscreen every day.

Late May outfit: T-shirt, shorts possible on warm afternoons. Thin cardigan or light jacket for evenings. Comfortable walking shoes. Compact umbrella for the rainier days around May 25 and 29.

The wind factor — still the most important variable

This is the one thing I'll say about Gangneung that applies every single month of the year, including May: the East Sea wind doesn't follow the thermometer. A 23°C day in the city center feels completely different from a 23°C day on the rail bike or standing on the Cheongsapo cliff path. The wind comes off open ocean and it drops the effective temperature fast.

In May this is less dramatic than in April, but it's still real. Keep a windbreaker or light jacket accessible at all times — in your bag, not your hotel room. Every outdoor attraction in Gangneung has exposed sections where you'll feel it. The rail bike in particular is fully open to the wind the entire ride. Go prepared and you'll be fine.

Umbrellas: if rain is in the forecast, a compact one is worth having. But you don't need to bring one from home — convenience stores throughout Gangneung sell them for around ₩3,000 (about $2.50).

Best outdoor spots in May — rail bike, beaches & coastal walks

May is when Gangneung's outdoor attractions genuinely shine. The weather cooperates, the crowds haven't hit summer levels yet, and the coastal scenery — the deep blue of the East Sea against clear spring sky — is at its best. This is the time to be outside as much as possible.

Outdoor spots to prioritize in May: Gangneung Rail Bike (run along the coast on a clear day), Gyeongpo Beach and Gangmun Beach (cherry blossoms are gone but the spring green and sea combination is beautiful), Cheongsapo Monorail (cliff views over the East Sea, best on clear days), Jeongdongjin (Goblin filming location, Hourglass Park, sunrise spot), Jumunjin (BTS Spring Day bus stop + Goblin breakwater, easy to combine), Heonhwa-ro Coastal Road (cliff drive, requires a car).

Best days for outdoor activities: mid-May clear days (roughly May 10–20) are the prime window. On those days the East Sea turns a vivid turquoise that simply doesn't appear on overcast days. If you can schedule your outdoor-heavy plans during this stretch, do.

Rail bike in May — the ideal season

I've ridden the Gangneung Rail Bike in multiple seasons, and May is genuinely the best time to do it. The combination of warm-but-not-hot temperatures, clear skies, and the East Sea at its spring blue is hard to beat. In summer the heat makes the open-air ride uncomfortable. In April the wind can be punishing. May sits right in between — warm enough to enjoy being outside, clear enough for the water to look the way it does in the photos that make people want to come here.

The practical notes remain the same year-round: book online in advance, especially for weekends — it sells out. Arrive a little early. Bring your jacket for the ride itself even on warm days, because the wind resistance of cycling adds up. The rail bike runs from Jeongdongjin toward Gangneung Port along the coastal track — one of the most scenic rides in Korea.

Goblin filming sites & Gyeongpo Beach in May

The Goblin drama filming locations — Jeongdongjin Hourglass Park, Jumunjin Breakwater, Heonhwa-ro — all look their best on clear days when the horizon is visible and the sea has color. May's clear stretch gives you the best chance of hitting these on a good-weather day. I found Jumunjin Breakwater by accident — I was looking for a café with ocean views and a Chodang gelato spot nearby, and stumbled onto one of the most famous Goblin filming locations right next door. That day happened to be clear, and the view was genuinely stunning. Plan for a clear day and it delivers every time.

Gyeongpo Beach in May has a different beauty from April. The cherry blossoms around Gyeongpo Lake are finished, but the surrounding greenery in late spring is lush and the sea temperature is starting to feel almost approachable. It's a great month for early morning beach walks — quiet, light, and beautiful in a way the summer crowds don't allow.

Rainy day plan — Gangneung food & café tour

May has fewer rainy days than April in Gangneung, but they still show up — particularly around May 2, 25, and 29 based on this year's forecast. When it rains, Gangneung's indoor scene is more than good enough to fill a full day. This city has one of the best café cultures in Korea and a serious seafood and local food tradition. A rainy day here is an eating day, and that's genuinely not a bad thing.

Anmok Beach Café Street — Korea's original coffee vending machine strip, now a full stretch of specialty cafés overlooking the beach. Rainy day window seats here are honestly one of the better experiences in Gangneung. The grey sea through a café window with a good cup of coffee is its own kind of beautiful.

Chodang Sundubu — Gangneung's signature dish. Soft tofu made with seawater, silky and slightly briny. The Chodang village area has a whole street of restaurants. One bowl on a rainy day is exactly right.

Jungang Market dakgangjeong — spicy-sweet fried chicken, Gangneung's most famous street food. The market is covered so you can browse even in the rain. Always a line, always worth it.

Terarosa Coffee flagship — one of Korea's most respected specialty roasters, based right here in Gangneung. A converted warehouse space with visible roasting equipment. If you take coffee seriously, this is a destination in itself.

Jumunjin Fish Market — squid, snow crab, flatfish caught fresh from the East Sea. Prices are better than in the city center. The covered market sections stay accessible even when it rains.

Gangneung May travel prep checklist

What to pack — T-shirts as the base for all of May / Light windbreaker or jacket — keep it in your bag, not your hotel / Sunscreen, apply daily from May onward / Compact umbrella for late May rainy days (or buy locally for ~₩3,000) / Comfortable walking shoes / Waterproof sneakers if early May rain is forecast.

Planning your daysTarget mid-May (May 10–20) for outdoor activities — clearest window of the month / Rail bike and sea train: book online in advance, sells out on weekends / Outdoor spots (rail bike, Cheongsapo, Jeongdongjin): go on clear days / Rainy days: Anmok cafés, Chodang sundubu, Jungang Market, Terarosa / Morning starts: outdoor spots are quieter and better lit before 10am.

Getting around — Gangneung city center is walkable and taxi-friendly. Jeongdongjin and Jumunjin are 20–40 minutes from the city by bus or taxi. For Heonhwa-ro and more flexible coastal exploration, a rental car makes a real difference. KTX from Seoul to Gangneung Station takes about 2 hours — book in advance especially for weekends.

Final thoughts — what May in Gangneung is really like

May is the month I'd point anyone toward if they're deciding when to visit Gangneung for the first time. The weather is cooperative without being unpredictable, the outdoor experiences are at their best, the food is as good as it ever is, and the city hasn't yet hit the summer crowd density that can make peak season feel rushed.

I've been to Gangneung in every season and mid-May on a clear day — rail bike running along the coast, the sea that particular shade of blue that only appears in good spring light, coffee from Anmok afterward — is one of the best combinations of place and season I know of anywhere in Korea. The wind still has a little presence, especially at the coast. But in May it's refreshing rather than punishing. Pack the light jacket, book the rail bike early, and give yourself at least a day and a half here. Gangneung in May rewards the time you give it. Have an amazing trip!

Heads up about Gangneung weather forecasts: The data in this post reflects conditions at time of writing. Gangneung's coastal weather can shift quickly. Always recheck 2–3 days before each day's plans. A forecast that looks rainy a week out often improves considerably as it approaches. Check again at breakfast and adjust your outdoor vs. indoor plans from there.
