Seoul May weather, rose festival & what to wear — a local's complete guide

Why May is the best month to visit Seoul

"How's the weather in Seoul in May?" — I always give the same answer: it's the best month of the year. Honestly, if someone asked me when to visit Korea, I'd say May or October without hesitating. Those two months are genuinely in a league of their own.

May is what Koreans call 계절의 여왕 — the Queen of Seasons. And it really earns that title. The cherry blossoms from April are gone, but roses start blooming, the parks turn a deep lush green, and the city fills up with locals going on day trips and weekend getaways. Korean families are out in force this month — picnic blankets on the Han River, couples in the parks, school trips everywhere. There's a warmth to the city in May that you don't get at any other time of year.

This is also the month of Korea's Golden Week holidays, when Children's Day and Buddha's Birthday fall close together and create a stretch of days off that the whole country takes seriously. It adds to that festive, energetic feeling — but it does mean popular spots get crowded, so there's some strategy involved. In this guide I'm covering everything: real 2026 weather data, a week-by-week Seoul May outfit guide, yellow dust prep, Golden Week tips, and the outdoor activities — including a personal favorite — that make this the best month to be in Seoul.

Seoul May weather forecast

May in Seoul is noticeably warmer than April across the board. The biggest change is in the overnight lows — they stay comfortably mild, so mornings no longer feel cold. Rain still shows up occasionally but far less frequently than in April.

Period High temp Low temp   Conditions
May (May 1–10) 19–22°C (66–72°F) 9–14°C (48–57°F) Mostly sunny, rain May 6
Mid May (May 11–20) 21–24°C (70–75°F) 11–15°C (52–59°F) Lots of sunshine, rain May 15–16
Late May (May 21–30) 22–26°C (72–79°F) 12–16°C (54–61°F) Warm and clear, rain May 24

The most noticeable difference from April is the overnight low. In April, mornings could drop to 4–8°C (39–46°F), making a proper jacket non-negotiable. In May, the lowest you'll see is around 9°C (48°F) in early May, rising to 13–16°C by late May. Mornings feel genuinely comfortable, and by late May the afternoons — hitting 26°C (79°F) on some days — start to feel like early summer.

Local tip

May is the month where Seoul stops feeling like a "jacket required" city. A light cardigan in your bag is usually all the backup you need. Heavy coats are just extra luggage at this point.

What to wear in Seoul in May — layering by week

The core formula for Seoul May outfits is simple: t-shirt base, one light layer for mornings and evenings. April was about serious layering — trench coats, proper jackets. May is much more relaxed. By late May, shorts are completely reasonable during the day.

Early May
High 22°C (72°F) / Low 9°C (48°F)
T-shirt + cardigan or light jacket
Morning/evening still need a layer
Jeans or cotton trousers
Comfortable sneakers

Mid May
High 24°C (75°F) / Low 11°C (52°F)
T-shirt during the day
Thin long-sleeve or cardigan for evenings
Cotton pants or jeans
Light sneakers

Late May
High 26°C (79°F) / Low 13°C (55°F)
T-shirt on its own (fully sufficient)
Shorts are an option
Light cardigan for evenings if needed
Sunscreen — non-negotiable

Yellow dust days
Concentrated early–mid May
KF94 mask — bring 2–3 from home
Sunglasses help with eye irritation
Check air quality index every morning
Shift to indoor spots on bad days

One thing May adds to the packing list that April doesn't: sunscreen. UV levels climb significantly from May onward and they're strong even on overcast days. Umbrellas are easy to pick up locally at any convenience store or Daiso for around ₩3,000 (about $2.50) — no need to pack a heavy one.

Yellow dust & fine dust — what to know

Yellow dust (황사) and fine dust (미세먼지) can show up in early and mid-May. Check the air quality index on Naver Weather or the Korean Meteorological Administration app every morning. If the reading is "Very Bad," wear a KF94 mask and keep outdoor time minimal. Air quality tends to be slightly better in the afternoon than in the morning on dusty days.

Golden Week — Children's Day & Buddha's Birthday crowd tips

May is Korea's busiest domestic travel month, and the reason is the holiday cluster. Children's Day falls on May 5th every year, and Buddha's Birthday (which follows the lunar calendar) often lands in May, creating a stretch of consecutive days off that Koreans call Golden Week. The whole country seems to be on the move.

2026 May public holidays

May 5 (Tuesday) — Children's Day
Buddha's Birthday — check the exact date on a Korean calendar app (lunar-based, varies yearly)
Major Seoul attractions see their heaviest foot traffic of the year during this period
KTX trains and accommodation book out 2–3 weeks in advance — plan early

The strategy that actually works: arrive early. I went to Gyeongbokgung at 9am during a holiday weekend and had a genuinely comfortable visit. By 10:30am it was a completely different scene. The early morning light is also better for photos — which in May is its own bonus. For non-holiday weekends, crowds are manageable and the city has that perfect spring energy without the Golden Week intensity.

Best outdoor activities — Han River picnics & rose festivals

This is where May really earns its Queen of Seasons title. The weather is made for being outside, and Seoul has no shortage of places to enjoy it.

May Seoul outdoor picks

Han River picnic — Yeouido, Ttukseom, Banpo parks — peak picnic season
Rose festivals — Jungnangcheon Rose Festival (mid–late May), Olympic Park Rose Plaza
Gyeongbokgung & Changdeokgung — traditional palace grounds at their best in late spring green
Bukchon, Seochon, Ikseondong — perfect t-shirt weather for neighborhood wandering
Namsan Cable Car & summit — May skies are some of the clearest of the year

The Han River parks are one of Seoul's best free experiences, and May is peak picnic season. Locals do this constantly — grab snacks from a convenience store, spread out on the grass, and spend an afternoon by the water. Yeouido Hangang Park is the most accessible and lively. Ttukseom has a younger crowd. Banpo has the famous fountain bridge show in the evenings. Picnic mats are available cheaply at Daiso if you want to pick one up locally.

Olympic Park Rose Garden — a local's personal pick

I live near Olympic Park, and every May the Rose Plaza (장미광장) inside the park becomes genuinely one of the most beautiful spots in all of Seoul. Thousands of roses in full bloom, wide open green spaces, and an atmosphere that's completely different from the busier tourist areas — quieter, more local, more relaxed.

If you're already heading to the Jamsil area for a concert at KSPO DOME, or just exploring that part of the city, the Rose Garden is right there and it would be a shame to miss it. Olympic Park itself is also wonderful for a picnic — far more spacious than Han River parks on peak days, and the scenery in late May when everything is in bloom is genuinely special. Mid-to-late May is the sweet spot for peak roses.

Seoul May travel prep checklist

Here's everything you need before your Seoul May trip.

What to pack — T-shirts as the base (you'll wear them every day) / 1–2 light layers: cardigan or thin jacket for mornings and evenings / KF94 masks — bring a few, or buy at any Korean pharmacy on arrival / Sunscreen (UV is strong from May, apply daily even on cloudy days) / Sunglasses (UV and yellow dust double duty) / Compact umbrella or buy locally (~₩3,000)

Planning your days — Golden Week (around May 5): hit popular spots at 8–9am before crowds build / Yellow dust forecast: check air quality index every morning / Han River picnic: schedule on a clear afternoon — mid and late May are best / Olympic Park Rose Garden: peak bloom mid-to-late May, combine with Jamsil area visit

Weather & air quality apps — Check both weather and fine dust levels every morning. Naver Weather and the Korean Meteorological Administration app are both reliable. On days marked "Very Bad" for air quality, shift to indoor plans without hesitation.

Final thoughts — what May in Seoul is really like

If I had to pick one month for someone's first visit to Korea, it would be May. The weather is as close to perfect as Seoul gets — warm enough for t-shirts, cool enough that you're not wilting in the heat, and with enough sunny days that you can genuinely plan around being outside.

May and October are Korea's golden travel months, and locals know it. The parks fill up, the outdoor cafés are packed, families go on day trips, couples walk the river paths — there's an energy to Seoul in May that the city doesn't quite have at any other time of year. Bring sunscreen, pack a KF94 mask or two for yellow dust days, and make time for a Han River picnic. And if you're near Jamsil, please don't skip the Rose Garden at Olympic Park. It's one of those spots that locals love and visitors almost always miss. May in Seoul is genuinely hard to get wrong. Have an amazing trip!

Heads up about Seoul weather forecasts

Weather data in this post is based on the forecast at time of writing. Always recheck 2–3 days before each day's plans. During Golden Week, keep your itinerary flexible enough to adjust if a rainy day or poor air quality day shows up. The good news: May rarely disappoints for long.
